Mogadishu 01, Agust, 2009, 3:22 AM-ET (SOMINA) Somalia parliament rejected Saturday a memorandum of understanding on the maritime boundary between Kenya and Somalia which was signed by the two sides on
April, officials said.
Members in the Somalia parliament had sessions in the past three days debating on the agreement, which they said violates the maritime boundaries of Somalia.
"After debating about the memorandum understanding on the maritime boundaries between Somali and Kenya, the parliament unanimously rejected the deal", Sheik Adan Mohamed Nur, Somalia speaker announced.
"334 lawmakers out of 347 members in the session rejected the understanding memorandum on the sea boundaries signed by the governments of Somalia and Kenya, so that the agreement gets out of legality", he added.
the agreement has been signed on April by officials from Somalia government and Kenya in the capital Nairobi.
"We are very much appreciated by the decision we made today because this agreement
violates the territorial rights of Somalia, it is really a victory that we rejected the agreement which gives our territorial waters to kenya", Mohamed Qanyare Afrah, a Somali law maker said.
