Mogadishu July, 20, 2009, 9:38 AM-ET (SOMINA)- Thousands of displaced families took in the streets outside Mogadishu Monday to protest against the termination of water provided by a local non-governmental organization.
The many camps around Afgoye corridor hosting families displaced by the endless violence in the capital had been dependants of water provided by the Centre for Education and Development, a local non-profit organization funded by international aid agencies in the past two years.
The demonstrators who carried placards reading slogans appealing the CED to maintain contributing water for the displaced families marched and chanted “long life CED, we will never forget your support”.
The demonstrations came amid fears by the displaced families that the local NGO, CED might not longer maintain providing water to the camps, after three year of carrying out the project with the support of OXFAM NOVIB.
“We will never forget what CED has been doing for the impoverished families living in those camps in the past three year; I wish that favor won’t last so early, Adan Ade, one of the leaders of the displacement camps outside Mogadishu said.
CED also provides house hold materials, sleeping bags, and rations to displaced families living camps around five regions in southern Somalia.
The organization rented water tanks that transported water from wells in Mogadishu to provide it to the families living in the camps around Afgoye corridor. The project continued in the past three years.
